Welcome to another great Rotary newsletter! We thought President Luene had made it a
priority to get the meeting started on time with or without Bill Uhland clinking a glass!
Of course Bill was here this week and could not wait. Don Findlay said the invocation,
Grannie lead us in the Pledge, and the greeter-ticket master was Rob. We had two
visiting Rotarians today, Jerry Marazoni from Encinitas and Robin Koelkebeck from Oceanside.
We also had a few visitors as Jean-Jacque is back from France and brought his wife
Elene. Ken Davidson brought two of his sons, William and Joseph, and of
course no meeting would be complete with out Mr. Grannie (Charles).
Things took a little change here as Stephanie took over and asked us all outside for a quick
attack dog demonstration.
Our program, Pacific Coast K-9 had brought one of their clients and
her dog to show us some of the defensive training they provide. This German Shepard is a family
dog that on command can also protect you from intruders.
.
Back inside, Luene reminded everyone to look at the current event reminder. They will be
on every table when you come in. These are perfect for putting up on the refrigerator to remind
you of upcoming events. There is also a list of weekly meeting responsibilities out for July,
August and September. Please check it or look it up on the
website. We need everyone’s participation to make the year go smoothly. Sam Vakil,
with help from George, is going to put out an updated print version of the Club Roster.
Please look at the sheet being passed around and make any changes as needed.
Stephanie reminded everyone about Saturday July 26th. We will have a Meeting/Picnic
at Woodland Park. Please join the
Summer Concerts in the Garden sponsored in part by the Rotary
Club of San Marcos for a fun evening of Big Band Music. Sign up sheet will be going around.
Bring a side dish and a beach chair and come enjoy the music. Show your colors and wear a handsome
San Marcos T-shirt available form Luene for only $22.
Fine-Master Grannie got started today by pinching Juanita $5 for a “Pig Roast” picture
in the newspaper a couple of weeks ago. And since we are Dark next week for Stephanie’s
Birthday we sang to her and she only had to pay $10. (Message to Grannie, you missed someone’s
birthday this week.) Doc Burton was mentioned so many times by last week’s speaker that he
just had to pay $5 also. Sam Vakil who was glad to have had successful Cataract surgery
last week started happy dollars. He was also happy that the Wheelchair project pictures are
out. If you bought a wheelchair you should be receiving your picture. With a fist full
of money he had one last happy dollar because he found out his friend Andre in Santiago,
Chile is alive and well. Making contact with him again means that the Rotary computer for
the Blind project we donated to is still going! John Forst was happy Don Findlay
filled in for him doing the invocation and Jean-Jacque was $10 happy to be back from his
extended trip back to France. My thanks to Jean-Jacque for his kind words about the website
and the newsletter making him feel like he hadn’t missed much. Bill Schramm announced the
Old Timers Picnic that will be held August 16th. More details to follow. Luene finished
with her daughter in-law winning something, the Palomar Student Center finally open, and
Jean-Jacque being back with us.
Meal on Wheels for July. Still in need of volunteers for the last week. Step on up and call Darrell.

Our Speaker today was Jay Wendell, owner of Pacific Coast K-9 and Seacrest Kennels.
Their motto is “Building a Better Working Relationship Between Man and Dog”. With the help
of Rob and Denise they can do Obedience, Protection Training, Behavior Training and
Puppy Management.
Jay told us that training could start as early as when a puppy is ready to
come home. They have customized programs to fit individual needs. From Toy Poodles to
Great Danes, all dogs and their owners can benefit from quality training. All dogs are
trained using verbal and hand signals. Rob showed us Klaus who is a graduate of the training and
was with them for boarding.
The owner had asked them to train him using German voice commands. I think that Klaus is
Bi-Lingual because as Jay was saying commands in English such as stay, sit and heel to let us know
some basic commands, Klaus was trying to keep up but when Rob started in German Klaus knew who was
boss and what to do. Basic enrollment for a 21-day session that includes a handler’s course
is $1200. Jay told us that all training done by them is guaranteed for the life of the pet
and refresher courses are done every Saturday. If you are going out of town and need to board
your dog, refresher training is provided as a courtesy and will ensure a long term, long lasting
relationship. There were many questions but the age old “You can’t teach and old dog new
tricks” wasn’t one of them. I guess maybe there is always hope.
Rob Eckert won the wine drawing.
Don’t forget, next week’s Thursday meeting is changed to Saturday.
President Luene said she is going through the alphabet for weekly duties. Don’t worry
about next week but this is who’s on for July 31st. The Greeter should be Jean-Jacque
Foucherot, Pledge by Pat Hodgkin, Invocation by Juanita Hayes and Sam Hamod
will sell raffle tickets.
Until next week ... Rob
