President Luene started our meeting back in the Country Club after several weeks of
gallivanting around. Don Findlay said the invocation. Matilda led
us in the Pledge, Matilda was the greeter and Larry sold wine raffle tickets.
We had four visiting Rotarian’s, Chuck Linn, Robin Koekelbeck, Nancy Campbell, formally
from Colorado but now a San Marcos resident, and Kim Muslusky from San Diego North.
Luene brought the “Box” but forgot to tell us we all need to contribute a little San Marcos
Rotary History. Bring photos and memorabilia for RI Centennial in '05 and our Club’s 50th
in '06 to be put in a Rotary History Box. She will bring the box week after week until
you put something in it and if you don’t like your picture please replace it with a like dated
item.
Jean-Jacques and Joan are working hard on the “Fire Bear” project
and they need
our help. To sell these by December 15th they need everyone to visit at least one local
Rotary Club with a bag of Bears. They have chosen a family from the Paradise Fire that
lost everything. They have small children and the money will go to helping them rebuild
their lives. We had a successful day of sales this past weekend.
We have another excellent opportunity Sunday to sell Bears at the Encinitas
Street Fair. What better way to dip into the community for support and Rotary Goodwill?
Jean-Jacques will set up at 7AM and Bill Schramm will help out from 8 until 1 PM
but we need more volunteers. Please go for a few hours.
Rob had Pat's sign up sheets and announced that along with the Holiday
party we are supporting not just one family but two with presents of clothing, toys, food
and love this year. There are lots of young children on the list this year so please
open up your hearts and your wallets. If you signed your name on a list today thank
you. If you didn’t or just forgot shame on you, we need everyone’s participation.
Luene thanked all of us that were there for doing such a wonderful job on the house
in Mexico. She presented John, Joe, George, Darrell and Rob with “Lend
a hand pins”. Pictures were passed around and lots of good memories were told. The
best story was told by George who said, Esperanza (The mother) told him. “Last night
my family slept in a shack, tonight we sleep in a castle”. Many thanks to Joe for
organizing this project, the Tijuana Rotarians for the outstanding dinner and of course
the Corazon people for really doing an outstanding job of helping poor in Mexico.
Photos are available here.
There weren’t too many fines today but Larry paid $10 for Wife Terry’s Birthday
and Rob paid a like amount for his and Robin’s 24th anniversary. Joe
had a happy dollar because we did such a great job in building the house. Bill,
one of the lead builders told us that some “other” Rotary groups like to delegate more than
work but he would be proud to work with us again!

Kim Muslusky, a San Diego North Rotarian and volunteer for 1000 Smiles, today gave our
program.
Started by several Rotarians in the early 80’s it became a District 5430 project
in 1985. With Clinics in Ensenada and Juarez Mexico plus one in San Juan Costa Rica it
takes thousands of dollars to make those thousands of smiles. Most people don’t know that
Cleft Palate Deformities are caused mostly by genetics, malnutrition and poor prenatal care.
The first day of the weekend clinic -Friday- is devoted to dental care for as many children as
can be seen. Dentistry and orthodontics are offered at the newly opened Dental Clinic.
Also on Friday at the Dental Clinic surgeons are examining children to determine who can be
helped by surgery on the next day. Early on Saturday morning of each clinic, volunteers
transport a trailer containing all operating room supplies and equipment to the General Hospital.
Then volunteer nurses, surgeons, technicians and anesthesiologists assemble everything into the
hospital's operating rooms and the cases begin. Often as many as 32 surgeries to correct
facial deformities and related ear problems are conducted. During both the dental and surgical
clinic days tireless volunteers assist the children and their families. Lunches, toothbrushes
and counseling are made available to all. All volunteers are welcomed as are donations.
Or, contact them for more information about Thousand Smiles/Mil Sonrisas at
www.thousandsmiles.org.
Kim showed us a very moving video on really what it’s all about, Kids and giving them the opportunity
to only survive but thrive. Thanks Kim for a great program.
Next week we are at Sam Mahr’s house for the Holiday Party. On December 11th the Greeter should
be Joe, Pledge will be led by Bill Schramm, Invocation by Kerry Ross and
Sam Mahr will sell raffle tickets.
George won the Wine.
Our next speaker will be a surprise, as I have not heard yet who it will be.
Luene’s thought for the week is from the Diary of Anne Frank. “Think of all the beauty
still left around you and be happy.”
As Luene would say, “Have a Great Rotary Week”... Rob
