Welcome to the San Marcos Rotary Club, where we do something everyday to make this world a
better place and we celebrate our International Diversity. President Joan
started the meeting with Jim Kelley saying the invocation and Kenny leading us in the
pledge. The greeter was Ruth and Rob Jones sold wine raffle tickets.
The room was abuzz as everyone finally got a chance to meet our adopted family.
Lawrence, Preston and Aubrey
joined us and as Joan says, “we truly make
Hearts Sing, Minds Expand and Sprit’s Soar”. They wanted to thank us so Bill
read a card from them and passed it around.
We had two visiting Rotarians with us today, Nancy Campbell who is camping here
this winter to say out of the snow in Colorado and Andy Powers who just moved here
from the Los Angeles area. Also joining Andy was his wife Melanie.
Our guests for the day included the effervescent Nancy Wood, Rod’s wife
Carol, Rob’s niece Alicia Nix, Darrell’s son-in-law Chris,
and Joan’s friends Peggy and Richard Lucas. Joan also introduced
our servers today, Daisy and Tony, and thanked them with a gift.
Today was to be a club assembly but Joan said what the heck we need another
Holiday Party. There were a few announcements and some I added on my own.
January 13th is the 40th anniversary of the San Marcos Interact Club. There
will be more details following but it should be lots of fun. Joan then passed
around a picture with our then President Bill Uhland and the new Club.
She also reminded us that next week we are DARK. There is no meeting between
Christmas and New Years. If you show up no one will be there. This is
your first warning.
Joan announced last week the 2005-2006 slate of Club Officers and receiving
no objections they will be George Burolla who will be our President-Elect,
Bill Wood will be Secretary, and Dan Stracka will be Treasurer.
Chuck Linn reminded us of the “Every Rotarian, Every Year” campaign for the
RI permanent fund. Our goal of 100% Club participation is over half way there
so if you have not given Chuck your money please consider it while it will still
work as a tax deduction for this year!
Bill Schramm finally took over and as Recognition Master wasted little time
in acknowledging Doc, Stephanie and Shelly for their Club Anniversary.
And in true to the task of finding out a little more about our Marine guests we all
had to take the quiz and find out a little more about Lawrence’s home town
of Trinidad, Colorado. If you were not there ask Nancy Campbell, I’m
sure she will be happy to tell you as this is a G rated newsletter! Bill
then asked each table to pick a spokesman and tell us all about a project or event
our Club participated in this year. Stephanie was first and reminded
us about our Centennial Project that has really taken root in the Tot Lot at the
Senior Center. Glenn acknowledged the Dictionary Project were we have
delivered over 4000 books to third graders in San Marcos. Sam Vakil
remembered going to India and with the money raised form our Club and matched by
RI, they were able to set-up 6 talking computers for the Blind. Ruth
told everyone about the Great Golf Tournament we sponsored for the Boys and Girls
Club and how someone finally won the Hole in One contest and pocketed $5000.
Bill and Nancy both remarked how rewarding the House build in Mexico was
and how our Club really changed lives. And finally Chuck talked about
how our generous giving to our local Foundation has doubled the opportunities we
have to do great things like giving to Village Banking. One last note, Bill
wanted everyone to remember George and Christine Burolla had a beautiful baby girl
named Chiara and that she weighed 7 lbs. 4 oz and was 19 in. long.

Our program today was Santa Claus and oh what fun we had.
If you missed it you might just get that lump of coal you’ve been deserving.
The wine drawing was won by Chuck Linn who gave the bottle to Lawrence.
Bill Wood gave us the thought for the week from Matilda, “Happiness is a
perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself”, Ralph
Waldo Emerson.
Next week we will be DARK do not show up because no one will be here. This is your
last warning. On January 6th Darrel is the program chair and I am sure it will be
a fantastic program. The greeter will be Chuck; Joe will sell wine
raffle tickets, Stephanie will give the Invocation, Sam Mahr will lead
the Pledge, and Darrell will have the “Thought for the week”.
As Joan says “Go out and make this world a better place”...Have a great Rotary Week...Rob.
Did you miss last week's issue?
