March 13, 1956 - A group of San Marcos business and professional men, meeting with
Hy Walker, Rotary International Governor of District 163, at Williams Square Barn set up
the machinery for the organization of a local Rotary Club, and voted to apply for a charter.
William Parsons was elected president of the proposed club. Other officers included
Frood Smith and Amos P. Trussell, vice presidents; Fred Williams, treasurer; H. L. Arthurs,
secretary; Volney Bell and Dr. John Dodds, directors.
Also attending the organizational meeting were James E. Downing, Gerald A. McAleese, John L.
Hazeltine, Wm. T. Gilbert, Paul A Biering, Gordon Fellows, Kenneth Claypool, William J.
Uhland, R. J. Eller, James B. Castle, John C. Wells, E. Mineah, Charles A. Carpenter, Chester
E. Galyean, Theodore Finch, Bruce M. Ruppenthal, James P. Carlson, Ernest B. Pechstein, Stanley
A. Mahr and William Livingston.
Chet White, H. D. Gibson and Dr. Phil Putman from the sponsoring Escondido Rotary Club were
also present.
April 9th, 1956 - Received Charter.
May 4, 1956 - Charter Presentation event.
January 14, 1965 - The county's first Interact Club was chartered under Rotary
International auspices. The new club at San Marcos High was formed to pursue local and
international service projects.
March 1966 - Pine trees were planted between the railroad tracks and Mission Road.
The project of city beautification was spearheaded by Flora Brown and the trees were donated by
the merchants and citizens of San Marcos. Representatives on the San Marcos Rotary Club
in the work party were then President Richard Bivin and Bill Uhland.
February 9, 1979 - San Marcos Rotarian Rick McCarthy volunteered to have his beard
shaved off as a fund raising effort to benefit the San Marcos Boys' and Girls' Club at a
club meeting. Donations of $1585 were raised. Members Bill Uhland and Lee Baron
did the deed of removing the 8-month old beard.
