Why Tilt Technology Wins the Work for Equipment Hire Companies

Tilt technology is reshaping the equipment hire industry, which is changing fast. Today’s contractors aren’t just looking for a machine - they’re looking for capability. With jobs getting more complex, deadlines tighter, and safety standards higher, tilt technology is quickly moving from a “nice-to-have” to a “must-have” for rental fleets.

Why tilt couplers are a game-changer

Tilt hitches have become essential tools for modern earthmoving. Unlike standard couplers, a tilt coupler lets operators angle any attachment - not just buckets. This means:

  • Fewer machine movements

  • Less ground damage

  • Faster cycle times

  • Improved safety (especially on slopes or in tight spaces)

For contractors, that translates into higher productivity and lower costs.

Attach2’s Heli-Tilt Coupler, for example, offers up to 180° of tilt, a squat profile that preserves breakout force, and full compliance with safety standards. With a robust three-year warranty and fast delivery, it’s easy to see why more hire companies are making tilt standard on their most-hired machines.

What rental leaders are saying

Tim Hart, Owner of HireWays, was an early adopter of quick hitches and tilt technology, which was not a ‘thing’ for hire gear in the early days.  He saw the potential it could bring to the business and its customers.

“We were fairly early in taking on quick hitches - no one had them at the start. You'd have to try to move your digger to get your levels right,” Tim explains. He made sure every digger had a tilt hitch. “Once the tilt hitch arrived, we saw it as a win for us. It got us ahead of the market and we certainly wouldn't have anything without a tilt hitch on it now.”

Tim also highlights the 180-degree tilt on the Heli-Tilt being an advantage for its customers.

“We have a range of different-size diggers for hire with Heli-Tilts,” explains Tim and with GPS systems now a popular choice for customers, due to the accuracy and precision they enable when digging, he says they have found the perfect combination for their customers. “We always use a Heli-Tilt when we're using GPS systems as it gives you fantastic control of the buckets and attachments. The GPS works really well for us, and that's where the market is heading."

With over 50 years of industry experience, earth gear focusses primarily on civil infrastructure hire. Ian McKenzie, Sales and Hire Manager, agrees with Tim and explains that with civil engineering customers now working on tighter subdivisions, their work is more detailed with little room for error.  They need to get closer to roadways, so the versatility of tilt hitches is crucial.

“You can't deviate too far away from providing a good hitch - in my opinion the Heli-Tilt has got it in one, hands down. With zero swing and a blade, it ticks all the boxes to do that type of scope of works,” explains Ian.

Why rental fleets without tilt are losing out

The market is clear: contractors want tilt. Rental companies that only offer standard couplers and tilt buckets are missing out on work. Tilt couplers enable all attachments to be tilted, not just buckets, and offer a greater degree of tilt capability. This means machines can handle more tasks without swapping attachments or repositioning, spending more time earning and less time idle.

Retrofit options make upgrading existing fleets straightforward, while new purchases can be standardised with tilt from day one. Pairing tilt couplers with matched bucket sets, like Attach2’s Performance Pack, ensures quick changeovers and consistent results—something contractors notice and value.

The bottom line: Tilt-ready fleets win more work

Industry events and customer feedback show that tilt couplers are now front and centre. OEMs and attachment specialists are investing heavily in this space because the benefits - productivity, safety, and versatility - are undeniable.

If you’re a rental company, now’s the time to consider making tilt standard across your fleet. As Tim Hart puts it:

“We certainly wouldn’t have anything without a tilt hitch now.”

And as Ian McKenzie says:

“When you've got a Heli-Tilt on the big machines, it just makes it so much better for the user.”
